Movie mania

Recently I've started renting quite a few dvds and vids from my local shop. I blame it all on winter! I don't want to go out in the cold, and so I quite happily rent a video, and snuggly sit under my kotatsu for an evening! I'm sure my fellow Yamaguchi JETs know where I'm coming from, and have probably done the exact same thing quite a bit these past few months! Anyway, the main reason for this post, is that I want your recommendations! The videos at my rental shop are all 90yen for a week! Thats ridiculous / amazing! Therefore, I want to increase my movie knowledge, and see some real classics / must-sees / cult gems etc etc. Pretty please leave me your comment here with your top 3 movies....i.e movies that you think everyone should see once in their lives. I reckon there are quite a few 'essential movies' that I have just never seen...and I don't know what they are!! So please give me your hot tips...I don't care about genre...I'll give anything a go, if I can get it for 90 yen!

    Not in any order...
    1. Hideous Kinky
    2. Stealing Beauty
    3. Run Lola Run
First two I like cause they are good traveller type movies. Run Lola Run I know you have seen but I like it...
These are not my all time tope 3 but 3 I like and could easily watch again.

Ok...one of my faves is a Spanish film "All About My Mother" but I don't know if Yanai will have it...any Kubrick is good, "Clockwork Orange", "2001;A Space Oddessey". I enjoyed "The Hours" although its not exactly light viewing...The Godfather Trilogy is a must or "Goodfellas"!

Oh I loved All about My Mother too. Great movie.
The Royal Tannenbalm(wrong spelling) was also really good...
Hmmm I like thinking back for god movies.

I really like "Nowhere in Africa", but I'm not sure if they have English subtitles for it here. It's about a Jewish family moving to Africa to escape the holocaust and finding that Africa in some ways becomes more of their home than their native country.

"Manny & Lo" is good, too. It has Scarlett Johanssen in it from when she was about 10 years old.

You've probably seen "Joy Luck Club", but it's really good, even if you've read the book.

Those aren't necessarily my top 3, but just what I could think of at the moment. Oh, and Alex was right about Magnolia and Momento--they're good.

You haven't seen Star Wars?!!! Where have you been?

Dogville, Secretary, and The Hudsucker Proxy. James Spader in Secretary is hot like the sun.

FYI, in case you want to time your watching according to your mood: Dogville is slow, deep thinker movie, Secretary is fractured fairy tale, and The Hudsucker Proxy is whipsmart satire set in the 1940s (or thereabouts).
