My favourite class-time of the year
I really don't enjoy my self-introduction lesson any more...I'm bored of it....I know about me...and the students are always dead shy ! I also now hate teaching Halloween lessons....i don't do anything for Halloween back home...and so it's really difficult to come up with activities that I and senior high school students will be excited by.
But Christmas lessons....well, they're just plain fun! This year, I decided to be lazy and use the same sheets/activities that I made last year. They seemed to go down well last year, and so i hoped that they would make a fun lesson again this time. We sang a Christmas song (John Lennon, Happy Xmas), did a 'Christmas in the UK' quiz, a fill-in-the-blanks listening activity to BandAid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas', and finished with the timeless classic, 'Pass the Parcel.' Yes, I'm a big fan of that game...it works at children's parties, adult's parties, and even in the classrooms of Japan. The students loved it ; accompanied by Mariah warbling 'All I Want For Christmas', they furiously passed the parcel around the room,
and screamed in delight when they realised that the music had stopped and they were the one clutching the newspaper-wrapped present. 7 layers of paper, 6 sweetie prizes, 6 christmas questions (which they had to answer before they could take the sweet), and one main stunning prize later (from the 100yen shop), the game was over, and the students and us teachers were feeling the warm fuzzy Christmas spirit! It was such fun!
The other great thing
about the classes were my JTEs! They really were good sports. They were quite happy to let me lead the show today, and took the background role of handing out stickers, and policing the parcel-passing. But they seemed to enjoy the lesson as much as the students, and happily agreed to dress up accordingly for the class. I was wearing my 98yen santa hat, and silver tinsel...Umeji-sensei agreed (with an embarrassed smile) to wear the reindeer antlers I had brought her...and Shiraishi-sensei brought his own full santa outfit!!!! He looked fab...the kids thought it was hilarious, and the looks on their faces as they walked through the door and saw him for the first time was priceless!...what a good sport! I have 8 more Christmas classes between now and next wednesday, and I am determined to enjoy those lessons as much as the ones today! Ho ho ho!
