The party and the dummy!

(And, no... before anyone comments...I am not the dummy in question!)

Last night we had a lovely little party to celebrate the 11th year anniversary of Yanai English Society (Y.E.S). This is a group that meets once a month, to have dinner, chat, and have a discussion about a chosen news article. There are usually 4 or 5 ALTS, and the rest are really lovely Japanese folk, who have a good English ability and want to talk and learn more. The group is led Ms Takashita, who used to be the head of English at my base school, before she retired, and who is one of the funniest Japanese people I know (her serene exterior veils a great gossip streak!). She organises this party every year to celebrate the birthday of YES, and so last night we had a wonderful feast at cute lil 'Taiwanya'.

The food was plentiful (and extremely yummy!), and the beer was flowing nicely. Although quite a few members were absent from the party, there was still great conversation, and it was a really nice evening. The highlight / strangest part of the party, however, was when one member entered the room with a large dummy!...like a ventriloquist dummy!....and started a little performance for us at the end of the meal. It was one of the most bizarre things I have witnessed in my little town of Yanai. This guy, who doesn't come to meetings very often, sitting on a stool, with a scary looking dummy, talking in a high-pitched voice, and paying tribute to both England and Australia through skits and songs (The Beatles 'Yesterday' will always make me laugh now!). His ventriloquism skills weren't great, but his enthusiasm and nerve scored top marks! Kat looked decidedly freaked out by the wide-eyed puppet, Ellen was rolling around in baffled laughter. I was probably somewhere in between I think! The way it's eyes flicked open, and the ridiculous length of its eyelashes certainly made it a little scary, and I am definitely puzzled as to why anyone would buy such a thing! But, hey, it added a nice bit of after-dinner entertainment to our party!
I'm definitely not sure if I like this puppet!
And Kat just looks perturbed by the whole thing!

Obvious comment alert: On the penultimate picture, which is the dummy?

peturbed...more like terrified! the fact that everyone was treating it like it was a real child was even more worrying...
