The flood is over!
Lots of water, 5 bewildered girls in pjs, early sunday morning visitors, many many many apologies (all week!), 4000 yen on im sorry / thank you for helping me presents, a teachers room of knowing looks, a landlord who says everything's fine (and even offered to get me new tatami!), and it's now done and dusted!
