Show & Tell
In my base school OC1 classes at the moment, we are doing a 'show & tell' activity, spread over three weeks. In last week's classes, they had to write a presentation about their favourite hobby, interest, or memory, and they also had to decide what they would bring into class to show the rest of the students. Today was group presentation time, with the inevitable few students who had forgotten to bring their favourite CD, book, photo etc. So for some of the class it was just 'tell' time...and no show! It was a really nice lesson though for me...as I really didn't have to do a lot all class...just wander around the groups, listening to these kids battling to string a whole sentence together, let alone a whole presentation! Of course there was the odd kid, who really didn't want to speak at all...and the 'naughty' kid in my 2nd period class(who I've already had stern words with!) whose presentation consisted of the sentence 'I like volleyball', to which I bellowed 'Longer please. More words, onegai-shimasu!'
But on the whole, the presentations are actually really...dare I say it...cute! Hearing the students talking about their club activity, or their favourite CD, was just a really nice relaxed lesson! Even the kids seemed to enjoy the lesson, as they spoke English, and then had to fill in an evaluation form on each other's presentations. They liked giving each other marks out of 10...and they were always very generous!
Some of my favourite presentation topics are ; Maroon 5 (yey...someone who likes a CD other than J-pop!), a trip to America (composed by a lovely girl called Fumi who has the most natural English of all the kids I teach at the moment), and a particularly passionate presentation on Chopin, by a kid who is...a little eccentric and shouts my name VERY loudly in the start of lesson greeting! Im really looking forward to next week, when 12 of the students will have to do their 'show & tell' to the class! I think I may have to take my camera!!
