Coming Soon...to a High School near you!!

Every Monday after school, I co-run my base school’s English Club. There’s only a few members…maybe 6 or 7 on a really good day…but they’re a nice bunch, who genuinely want to speak a bit of English, learn something about English-speaking countries…oh yeah…and watch movies!!! That’s the normal thing we do anyway…so far we’ve watched Pirates of the Caribbean, Pretty Woman, and Mona Lisa Smile. We also had a little Christmas party, when I showed them how to make paper snowflakes, and we played my brilliant game ‘Pin the Red-Nose on Rudolph’….(do you see what I did there…god, genius!!!) On Monday we’re having a mini Valentines party, and we’re all gonna eat chocolate and make cards from pink and red card, and glitter from the 100 yen shop!!! Do you see the hardships I face in my work!
Anyway, in July, our school has a big culture festival, where all the classes, and all the student clubs do displays, sing songs, make mini-movies, cook something….just basically do stuff! The two main girls in English Club, Mana and Yuka, decided that they wanted English Club to do a puppet show!!! WHAT!!! They thought it would be nice to do a traditional British puppet show of some description, and wanted to know if I had any ideas. After careful consideration, all I could think of was Punch and Judy!! I tried to explain the story and characters to the kids, but quickly realised how stupid it must all sound ; “Yeah, there’s this guy called Punch..he is married to Judy. He often hits Judy with a stick (or was it a rolling pin?)…there is also a dog…and some sausages,…and a baby…and a crocodile…and this all takes place in a small stripy tent on the beach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” They actually looked quite convinced by the idea, and seemed to just accept it as crazy English humour. However, I could see that a punch and judy show at a school festival in Japan, really wasn’t going to be pretty! Luckily, by the next meeting, I had come up with a sterling idea…which all the kids seemed very excited about, which other students might have some understanding of what is happening, and which I have stupidly agreed to write the script for….yep folks, coming soon to Yanai Senior High School, Japan…is Harry Potter : the Puppet Show! Sorry J.K!!!
